The Transport Policing and Enforcement Directorate (TPED) deploys cameras in and around bus lanes to reduce journey time and increase reliability and increase reliability across the network. Bus lane enforcement relies on cameras to help achieve its mission of gathering evidence, identifying offences and initiating proceedings against offenders. CCTV camera systems are a central part of TPED's work for London bus travellers.
There are two steps for our study at TPED. First, we will develop a modular model of the CCTV camera system which allows for the acceptance, transparency, efficiency and effectiveness of the camera system to be tested in relation to the stated goals of TPED. A modular model is suggested so that changing functionality can be integrated and the model redeployed to evaluate the camera system in the future. This model will work to isolate the variables which have an influence on bus speed, reliability and safety. Second, the model will be tested and used to investigate Bus Lane Enforcement in particular. We will examine:

  1. to what degree the use of cameras (bus cameras, CCTV, stationary cameras) in the current system contribute to the optimisation of bus travel and what other effects cameras have on the system.
  2. the problems and opportunities in the further development of the system. to what degree the model suggested in Phase I needs to be adapted to prepare it for routine repeated use.
